About 480 people a month search for an “AI Overview checker,” and what they find is mostly tool listicles. Here is the thing the listicles skip: there is no official checker, the unofficial ones all work the same way under the hood, and you can run that method yourself for free at the scale most businesses actually need.
I check AI Overview presence for client queries weekly. This is the exact method, what Search Console can and cannot tell you, and the honest line where paid tools start earning their subscription.
TL;DR
- The short answer: There is no official Google AI Overview checker, but a fixed panel of 20 to 50 queries run monthly in a clean browser session gives most businesses the same answer for free.
- How the free method works: Log three columns per query, Overview appeared, my site cited, and who else was cited, then repeat on a schedule so the trend line becomes the data.
- What Search Console reveals: Google is rolling out a dedicated generative-AI performance view for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Until it appears for your property, the data remains in the overall Performance report and manual query checks are still needed to verify citations.
- When to pay: A paid checker earns its cost when query count outgrows the hour, when you need history you did not collect, or when someone else needs the chart.
- If you are not cited: Rank first, then make the answer liftable under a question-shaped heading, then check who is being cited instead to learn what content shape to build.
Is there an official AI Overview checker?
No. Google offers no tool that reports which queries trigger AI Overviews or whether your site is cited inside them. Google has started rolling out a dedicated generative-AI performance view for AI Overviews and AI Mode, but it does not identify which pages were cited inside each answer. Google’s announcement says the new view is initially available to a subset of sites; the data also remains in the overall Performance report.
So every “AI Overview checker” you can buy is doing the same thing: running queries at scale, detecting whether an Overview rendered, and parsing out the cited domains. Useful, real, but not magic. Which means the method is replicable by hand, and at small scale, hand beats subscription.
The free method: a fixed query panel
This is the same discipline that anchors a GEO audit baseline, narrowed to one surface.
1. Pick 20 to 50 queries that matter. Not your whole keyword list. The queries where being in or out of the answer changes your business: category questions, comparison questions, the informational queries that feed your funnel.
2. Run them in a clean session. Incognito window, consistent location, logged-out where possible. AI Overviews vary by personalization, geography, and Google’s continuous experiments. A dirty session measures your bubble, not your visibility.
3. Log three columns per query. Overview appeared (yes/no), my site cited (yes/no), who was cited. Date the sheet. That last column quietly becomes your competitor citation intelligence, the input I use for competitor gap analysis.
4. Repeat on a schedule. Weekly for active campaigns, monthly for steady state. Triggering is dynamic, so the trend line is the data. A single check is an anecdote with a timestamp. My AI Overview presence tracker prompt structures the whole loop if you want it pre-built.
One hour a month buys you the answer to the three questions that matter: are Overviews sitting on my queries, am I in them, and is that changing?
What Search Console can tell you
Search Console now has two possible views. Some properties have the dedicated generative-AI report; others still only see the combined Performance report while the rollout continues.
The signature: impressions hold or rise while clicks fall on informational queries. An AI Overview appearing above your ranking absorbs clicks without costing impressions, so a widening impressions-to-clicks gap on question-shaped queries is the fingerprint of an Overview moving in. Pair the Search Console graph with your panel log and you can usually date the arrival.
What Search Console cannot tell you: whether you were cited inside the Overview, which is the metric that actually matters. Citation means brand exposure even without the click, the visibility-without-traffic dynamic that needs its own scoreboard. Only the panel, manual or tooled, measures citation.
When a paid AI Overview checker is worth it
Three honest triggers, in the order they usually arrive:
- Query count outgrows the hour. Hundreds of tracked queries makes manual checking dishonest, because you will stop doing it.
- You need history you did not collect. Tools that track continuously have the back-data on when an Overview appeared and when citations changed. Your spreadsheet only knows what you logged.
- Someone else needs the chart. Client reporting and executive dashboards want automated, repeatable data with a methodology nobody has to defend.
The options run from rank-tracking suites that flag AI Overview presence per keyword to dedicated AI visibility platforms that track citations across every AI engine, not just Google. If your question is bigger than “do AI Overviews cite me” and closer to “does AI search know I exist,” start with the cross-engine comparison in that guide instead.
Not cited? Here is the fix order
A panel full of “Overview appeared, site not cited” rows is a finding, not a verdict. Work the causes in this order:
- Rank first. Pages in the top ten get cited far more often. If you are not ranking for the query, that is the problem to solve, and it is a fundamentals problem, not an AI one.
- Make the answer liftable. The cited passages are overwhelmingly self-contained blocks that answer the question directly under a question-shaped heading. The full restructuring approach is in my AI Overviews guide.
- Check who is being cited instead. If it is Reddit threads and reference sites rather than your competitors, the Overview prefers a content shape you are not producing: community proof, definitions, comparisons. That tells you what to build.
The takeaway
You do not need to buy an AI Overview checker to know where you stand. A fixed query panel, a clean browser session, a three-column log, and a monthly hour produce the trend line that drives every real decision. Search Console corroborates with the impressions-up-clicks-down signature. Paid tools enter when scale, history, or reporting demands them, and not before.
Measure first. The fix list writes itself from the log.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Google AI Overview checker?
No. Google provides no tool that tells you which of your pages appear in AI Overviews or which queries trigger them for your site. Google is rolling out a dedicated generative-AI performance view for AI Overviews and AI Mode, but it does not replace direct checks of the answer or identify every cited page. Every dedicated AI Overview checker remains a third-party tool running queries and parsing results at scale.
How do I check if my site appears in AI Overviews for free?
Build a fixed panel of 20 to 50 queries that matter to your business, run them in a clean browser session weekly or monthly, and log three things per query: did an AI Overview appear, was your site cited inside it, and who else was cited. Use an incognito window and a consistent location since Overviews vary by personalization and geography. This costs nothing but an hour, and the trend line it produces is more decision-useful than any single snapshot.
Can Google Search Console show AI Overview traffic?
Yes, depending on the property. Google is rolling out a dedicated generative-AI performance view for AI Overviews and AI Mode, while the data also remains included in the overall Performance report. If the dedicated view is not available yet, the readable supporting signal is stable or rising impressions paired with falling clicks on informational queries—but that pattern is not proof of a specific Overview.
Why does an AI Overview show for a query sometimes but not always?
AI Overview triggering is dynamic. It varies by personalization, location, device, query phrasing, and Google’s own ongoing experiments, and the same query can trigger an Overview in one session and not another. This is why single spot-checks mislead and why a fixed panel checked on a consistent schedule, ideally in a clean session, is a more reliable measurement approach.
Are paid AI Overview checkers worth it?
They earn their cost when scale makes manual checking dishonest: hundreds of queries, multiple markets, or client reporting. Rank-tracking suites increasingly flag AI Overview presence and citations per keyword, and dedicated AI visibility platforms track it across engines. For a single site with a few dozen priority queries, the manual panel gives you the same decisions for free.
What should I do if my site is not cited in AI Overviews?
First confirm you rank: pages in the top ten for a query get cited in its Overview far more often, so a ranking problem comes before a citation problem. Then restructure the relevant page so the answer to the query sits directly under a question-shaped heading in a self-contained passage, add honest FAQ and Article schema, and make the author visible. Citation follows extractability once rankings exist.
