I’ve been working in search since blue links were the only game. Every shift since — mobile-first, snippets, ChatGPT, AI Overviews — has followed the same pattern. Here’s the arc.

  1. 2003 Blue Links

    Google becomes the front door.

    Pages rank by links and keywords. SEO is born as a discipline. Demand is cheap, durable, and won by the patient.

  2. 2015 Mobile-First

    Search moves to the phone.

    Mobile crawlability, page speed, and intent context become ranking factors. The box on your screen replaces the box on your desk.

  3. 2019 Zero-Click

    Featured snippets, position zero.

    Google starts answering directly above the links. Half of clicks vanish. Brands either earn the snippet or lose the query.

    Conversational search arrives.

    Buyers stop typing keywords and start asking questions. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude become real research tools, not curiosities.

    Citations replace links.

    Google AI Overviews land. Generative answers cite sources by name. SEO has to evolve into GEO — or get summarized away.

    Generative search is the default.

    Buyers ask AI before they ask Google. Brands that aren't legible to AI engines lose the shortlist before it's drawn.
